Football in the Groin

In one of my favorite Simpsons episodes of all time, Barney wins a film festival with his classic film "Football in the Groin." Needless to say, it was Homer's favorite.

Last night I did an interview with Aaron Rennie of CFB Weekly, a weekly podcast program featuring interviews with bloggers. It was fun, except for the fact that we were talking about a monumental Badger collapse in Ann Arbor rather than a win heading into the big Ohio State game. Aaron's term for it was a "Football in the Groin" game. Fitting.

Following Saturday's loss, there has been much questioning of whether this is the worst or most painful loss in recent Wisconsin football history. I think they are two different things. The worst losses come against teams you should clearly beat, or in which the performance was horrendous. Painful losses come in winnable games or in games of great importance.

Saturday's Michigan loss falls into both categories. Let's do a two-part discussion, starting with my list of the Most Painful Losses in Recent Wisconsin Football History (since Barry Alvarez's arrival).

1992, 27-25 at Northwestern. Jason Burns' fumble deprives us of a bowl bid.

1993, 28-21 at Minnesota. The only loss in an otherwise magical season.

1996, 34-30 against Northwestern. The Ron Dayne fumble game.

2000, 47-44 against Northwestern in double overtime. Thought we had made it through the Shoe Box suspensions with national and Big Ten title hopes intact, then this.

2001, 20-17 vs. Michigan. A punt hits Brett Bell, setting up the game-winning field goal.

2004, 30-7 at Iowa. Win and we're in the Rose Bowl, lose and we're in the Outback Bowl.

2005, 20-10 vs. Iowa. Barry's last home game is a loss. Our last home loss, and only home loss since 2003.

2008, 27-25 at Michigan. You saw it.

Discuss.

Can't comment on the pre-1996 games, but since then I think the toughest loss would be the 2000 game against Northwestern.

The 1996 Northwestern loss was awful, but I actually didn't get to see that game because my family was in town. Since that season jump-started the Ron Dayne era and eventual Rose Bowl(s), looking back it doesn't seem to sting as much.

I was reminded of how painful the 2000 game was when I took a recent flight to Vegas. Jet Blue has the Big Ten network and they showed the Oregon-UW game from 2000. Obviously, the Shoe Box suspensions were a big part of the telecast - I forgot that Fletcher lined up at wide receiver a couple of times - but Michael Bennett had that tremendous second half and the Badgers won. That team had so much talent on both sides of the ball, and had legitimate title hopes.

As upsetting as Saturday's loss to Michigan was, I never felt like UW had some great title hopes. Of course, the Badgers can still go on and do a lot of great things this season - Big Ten title, BCS - but there are no Bennetts or Fletchers on this team...with the exception of Beckum.

Pretty sure UW beat UM in 2007, courtesy of the Ryan Mallet Turnover-palooza.

You mean the 2008 UM loss.

Good catch, I fixed it.

What year did Wisconsin lose to Northwestern at Northwestern, the week immediately after the win over Ohio State in the Sorgi-choked-Lee Evans-miracle-touchdown game? 2003? That loss was atrocious.

It was like a continuation of a teen movie, where the geek (Schabert) gets the beauty queen. Then the next morning, it turns out that they have nothing in common. So at Northwestern, it turned out that the miracle throw to Evans was just a won off, and that Schabert was a poor D-I quarterback. Ugh.

You could argue that almost every loss to Northwestern since '92 has been painful. That is not a commentary on the quality of their program, since they've had several very good teams in that time. But consider the Northwestern losses that didn't make my initial list:

-1995, 35-0 NU - embarrassing to get blown out like that anywhere, and this was before anyone knew how good they were that year.

-2003, 16-7 NU - as Mr. Man said below.

-2005 - 51-48 - how do you score 48 points and lose? That was our only loss in our first eight games that year, before stumbling against Penn State and Iowa.

1997 was one of my favorite Badger wins, though, at Northwestern, when Money hit the game-winning field goal.
